Epidemiologist’s Report Linking Vaccines to Autism Removed from X

On Oct. 27, 2025, epidemiologist Nicolas Hulscher, MPH posted a report on X (formerly Twitter) providing evidence that vaccines are the leading cause of autism and soon after this post, Hulscher’s account disappeared from the social networking site.1
Later that day, Hulscher, who is affiliated with the McCullough Foundation and has been publishing studies and evidence about the harms caused by the mRNA COVID-19 biologic and COVID shot mandates, immediately sent out a message on another X account. He stated, “This is our study that appears to have resulted in a removal of my account from the search results.”2 3
The post that triggered the post removal from X described the new McCullough Foundation report as, “The Most Comprehensive Analysis Ever Conducted on the Causes of Autism.” The post further stated that “combination and early-timed routine childhood vaccination constitutes the most significant modifiable risk factor for ASD.”4
Hulscher claimed to have not been notified about the removal of his account before its disappearance. He opined:
I do believe that my sharing of our landmark autism report resulted in this apparent censoring of my account. This is gravely worrisome as X is supposed to be the flagship social media site of ‘free speech.’ Nonetheless, their sudden reversal of the obvious shadow ban eases some of these fears.5
X Promised a Social Media Platform for Free Speech
Removing the account of a controversial post on X is surprising considering X’s well known commitment to free speech. Multibillionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk, who purchased Twitter for $44 billion in 2022, vowed to transform the social media platform into a haven for free speech.6 7 Musk went so far as to pay the legal fees of a Frontline physician who supported informed consent and opposed Canada’s COVID-19 shot mandates.
At the time, X posted:
X is proud to help defend Dr. Kulvinder Kaur Gill against the government-supported efforts to cancel her speech… Free speech is the bedrock of democracy and a critical defense against totalitarianism in all forms. We must do whatever we can to protect it, and at X we will always fight to protect your right to speak freely.8
Musk Accused of Reducing Visibility of Accounts That Disagree With Him
A recent New York Times investigation alleged that the accounts of those who had public disagreements with Musk faced a marked decrease in engagement, reach and access to monetization tools. However, the internal algorithms of X are private, which makes it difficult to prove that a user’s visibility is affected by disputes with Musk.
Ari Cohen of the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression pointed out:
You can’t champion the First Amendment and then silence people who challenge you. That’s not how free speech works.9
Musk has positioned his platform to be a beacon of, “freedom of speech, not freedom of reach” and has stated that while he would not ban posters who express controversial opinions, he may choose to reduce their visibility.10
It appears that X’s treatment of Hulscher’s post went beyond reduced visibility as the entire account was shut down for a few hours after the controversial post before it was restored.
