FURTHER READING
I read and cited a great many books and articles in writing this book, and numerous others that I
will cite in part two. While all the books in my bibliography provided useful information, some I felt
were flawed by the partisan nature of the author’s predisposition and at times included statements that
I felt were ill-supported by the facts.
Other books, however, I found particularly sound. While no book, including my own, can include
all the facts on this fascinating history and none is perfect, I found the following books especially
valuable sources of information on the regional and U.S. history during the time period addressed in
my book, and I recommend them as a starting point for readers who wish to pursue this subject in
greater depth. (The following list is in no way exhaustive, as I have limited myself to just ten listings
in each category, causing me, reluctantly, to leave out many other equally superlative books.)
