Infant Boy in India Falls Unconscious and Dies After Vaccination

A one-month-old boy died in Telangana, India on May 11, 2019 shortly
after being vaccinated at a rural child care center in the town of
Kamareddy. The child’s parents said that the baby became
unconscious after receiving the vaccine and they subsequently took him to a private nursing home where physicians there declared him dead on arrival.1
It is unclear what vaccine was used, although India’s national vaccination schedule calls for the oral polio vaccine (OPV) and a “5-in-1” pentavalent vaccine (diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus, hepatitis B and Haemophilus influenzae type B) to be administered to babies at six weeks, 10 weeks and 14 weeks—a total of 18 vaccines over the course of two months.2 3
On Mar. 7. 2019, two babies, aged six and eight weeks died within 24 hours of receiving the pentavalent vaccine at a primary health care center in Hyderabad, India. Another 32 children who received the vaccine came down with fever and at least four of them developed serious health conditions.4
In June 2018, a two-month-old infant and three-and-a-half-year-old child died hours after receiving the OPV and pentavalent vaccines at community health centers in Chinhat and Indasai, India.5
In February 2018, two six-week-old infants died and seven other babies were hospitalized within a day after being vaccinated with the pentavalent vaccine at a health care clinic near Mandya, India.6
Pentavalent vaccines are manufactured by four pharmaceutical companies in India, including Serum Institute (Pentavac PFS), Panacea Biotecs (Easyfive TT), Biological E (ComBE Five) and Shantha Biotechnics (Shan5).4
