Russia Needs A New President–A Realistic One

Russia Needs A New President–A Realistic One

Russia Needs A New President–A Realistic One

Paul Craig Roberts

At Putin’s meeting with the permanent members of the Russian Security Council on January 21, Putin said:  “Now as for Greenland. What is happening around Greenland does not concern us in any way.”

One can only wonder how removed from reality Putin is.  President Trump repeatedly has said that Greenland is essential to US security and America’s competition with Russia and China for power. Yet Putin is unaware of the pending conflict that is more serious and dangerous to Russia than the one in Ukraine. The question has to be asked is there anyone in the Kremlin sufficiently awake to understand that a Ukraine settlement or not Russia’s subservience or otherwise destruction remains a goal of American foreign and military policy?

Putin was asked about his response to Trump’s invitation to be a member of Trump’s Gaza Board of Peace for $1 billion. Putin says “I would like to begin by expressing my gratitude to the US President for the invitation. We have always supported and continue to support any efforts aimed at strengthening international stability. We also appreciate the contribution of the current US administration to the search for a solution to the Ukrainian crisis.”

Putin’s response is that of a person who lives on a different planet. It shows that the president of Russia has no comprehension whatsoever of the threats that his country faces.

What does Putin mean by Russia has always supported efforts at strengthening international stability? What efforts is he talking about? The seizure of Russian tankers on the high seas? The attempted assassination of Putin himself? The attack on Russia’s strategic bombing fleet? The kidnapping of the President of Venezuela and his wife? Trump’s threats to Columbia, Cuba, Mexico, and Denmark? Washington’s overthrow of Iraq, Libya, Syria, Ukraine? Certainly Putin did absolutely nothing to prevent these overthrows. He is complicit in them. Putin has done nothing to stop the genocide of the Palestinians, so what are these efforts at strengthening international stability? What is Putin talking about?

Does Putin mean that supplanting Palestine with a Trump resort strengthens international stability? How can Putin possibly think at this stage that the current US administration is committed to a solution to the Ukrainian conflict? Why does Putin call the conflict a “Ukrainian crisis” when Russia has the power to militarily end the conflict tomorrow?

What is wrong with Putin? What is wrong with Lavrov? What is wrong with the Kremlin? Why is the Russian government incapable of understanding the situation that it is in?  Gilbert Doctorow reports that  influential Russians are asking these questions. Sergei Karaganov has been arguing since 2023 that Russia has lost deterrence from the way Putin has conducted the conflict in Ukraine. He says Russia should make a tactical nuclear strike on Germany or Britain in order to wake the European leaders from their delusion that Russia is a paper tiger. Recently he expressed this view on the leading Russian television show that deals with foreign affairs. https://gilbertdoctorow.substack.com/p/mr-sergei-karaganovs-lengthy-appearance?utm_campaign=email-post&r=dx5km&utm_source=substack&utm_medium=email

Putin pretends that adversaries are friends with whom he can make deals beneficial to Russia. If this unrealism continues, the world will pay for Russia’s denial of reality with nuclear war.
