Infant Girl in India Dies Day After Receiving Oral Polio and Pentavalent Vaccines

Two-month-old Priyanka Biswal died on Sept. 5, 2019, a day after
receiving the live attenuated oral polio vaccine (OPV), pentavalent
(diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus, hepatitis B and Haemophilus influenzae
type B) vaccine and vitamin supplements at a Community Health Center
(CHC) in
Naranapur, India.1 2
A report by the Orissa Post noted, “after intake of the polio drops, the child’s condition deteriorated on the way back home.” She developed a fever and was taken to the CHC on the evening of Sept. 4.1 2
According to a complaint filed by members of the child’s family, including Privanka father, no doctor was available to care for the child at the time of her admission to the CHC. Instead, a pharmacist examined the child and declared her dead.1 2
There was another report in August of two children (twins) having received routine vaccinations in Saharsa, India and becoming ill shortly afterward. One of the children died and the other was taken for treatment at a local hospital.3
Over the past two years, there have been several reports of babies dying or becoming seriously ill in India soon after receiving the “five-in-one” pentavalent vaccine. On June 15, 2019, a four-and-a-half-month girl died in India a day after she was given the pentavalent vaccine at a rural child care center in the village of Kudluru.4
Pentavalent vaccines in India are manufactured by four pharmaceutical companies, including Serum Institute (Pentavac PFS), Panacea Biotecs (Easyfive TT), Biological E (ComBE Five) and Shantha Biotechnics (Shan5).4
On Mar. 7. 2019, two babies, aged six and eight weeks died within 24 hours of receiving the pentavalent vaccine at a primary health care center in Hyderabad. Another 32 children who received the vaccine came down with fever and at least four of them developed serious health conditions.5
In June 2018, a two-month-old infant and three-and-a-half-year-old child died hours after receiving the OPV and pentavalent vaccines at community health centers in Chinhat and Indasai. In February 2018, two six-week-old infants died and seven other babies were hospitalized within a day after being vaccinated with the pentavalent vaccine at a health care clinic near Mandya.5
