The Deep State and the Hughes-Nixon-Lansky Connection
October 19, 2015
An attentive LRC reader has alerted me that in David Talbot’s new book, The Devil’s Chessboard: Allen Dulles, the CIA, and the Rise of America’s Secret Government, the author alludes to the groundbreaking Rolling Stone article, “The Hughes-Nixon-Lansky Connection: The Secret Alliances of the CIA From WWII to Watergate,” by
Howard Kohn, in discussing CIA covert funding of American domestic
political campaigns. (My copy is slated to arrive early next week from
Amazon and I can’t wait to delve into it.)
Younger LRC readers need to be critically aware of what they undoubtedly consider “ancient history” in shaping the world in which we all reside. Power elite analysis is one crucial tool in discovering this hidden history where the “underworld” of organized crime intersects with the “upperworld” of the elite establishment in the Deep State. Along with the above article, I highly recommend two others: Kirkpatrick Sales’ New York Review of Books “The World Behind Watergate,” and Jeff Gerth’s Penthouse “Richard M. Nixon and Organized Crime,” in presenting an anti-court history textbook account of that pivotal period. (The Kohn and another Gerth article struck their CIA/mobster targets too precisely and were subject to post-publication litigation in revenge.)
Six key books which cover this clandestine history are Jim Hougan, Spooks: The Haunting of America — The Private Use of Secret Agents; Carl Oglesby, The Yankee and Cowboy War: Conspiracies From Dallas to Watergate; Sid Blumenthal and Harvey Yazijian, editors, Government By Gunplay: Assassination Conspiracy Theories From Dallas To Today; Peter Dale Scott, Deep Politics and the Death of JFK; Peter Dale Scott, Dallas ’63: The First Deep State Revolt Against the White House; and Sally Denton and Roger Morris, The Money and the Power: The Making of Las Vegas and Its Hold On America.
