The medical freedom community lost a true champion with the passing of Dr. Jim Meehan from cancer on June 15 at age 59.
A brilliant physician, fearless advocate and dedicated family man, Meehan’s unwavering commitment to truth and patient-centered care left an indelible mark on the healthcare landscape.
Meehan was an outspoken critic of government pandemic policies, particularly regarding mask mandates, social distancing, COVID-19 testing and mRNA vaccines.
In an evidence-based scientific analysis he wrote, Meehan challenged the efficacy of masks in preventing virus transmission arguing that masks were ineffective, unnecessary and potentially harmful.
During the height of the pandemic, Meehan risked his medical practice to ensure patients received what he believed were necessary medications to keep them alive and help them avoid hospitalization.
His stances often put him at odds with mainstream medical authorities, leading to censorship on social media platforms.
‘A lion’s heart’
Dr. Paul Thomas, who considered Meehan a close friend and featured him on his “Against the Wind” podcast on CHD.TV in 2021, remembered Meehan as a person of “the highest integrity” who was “fearless and would never hold back the truth.”
“He had a lion’s heart, a booming voice and fierce determination to fight for our children’s right to freedom from coercion of any kind and everyone’s right to informed consent and bodily integrity,” Thomas said.
Brian Hooker, Ph.D., chief scientific officer for Children’s Health Defense, described Meeham as “one of the most gracious and caring medical practitioners I’ve ever had the privilege of meeting.” He said Meehan’s practice and life “were entirely devoted to serving the children and families who needed him most.”
Polly Tommey, CHD.TV program director, called Meehan’s passing “a tragic loss.” She remembered him as “not only … a brilliant doctor but one of the kindest people with an infectious sense of humor. She said she was grateful for “all he did for the children and the fight to protect the future.”
Barbara Loe Fisher, co-founder and president of the National Vaccine Information Center, called Meehan “a man with integrity” and an “intelligent, brave and caring doctor.” She said she was impressed with his “passion and commitment to standing up for what he believed in no matter what price he had to pay.”
Professional background and achievements
Meehan was a multifaceted professional, board-certified in addiction medicine, ophthalmology, preventive medicine and nutrition.
An award-winning West Point cadet, he later transitioned to medicine, graduating cum laude from the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine in 1998.
After completing his internship in internal medicine, he pursued an ophthalmology residency at the prestigious Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri.
His talent and dedication led to his appointment as chief of ophthalmology at the John Cochran VA Medical Center in St. Louis.
Meehan’s academic pursuits extended to editing the medical journal Ocular Immunology and Inflammation, where he honed his ability to discern high-quality medical research from biased pseudoscience.
Beyond his medical achievements, Meehan also was an accomplished martial artist. In 2013, he was inducted as a “Living Legend” into the Martial Arts Masters Hall of Fame, having attained a 5th-degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do and the title of NAGA World Jiu-Jitsu Champion.
Advocacy and contributions to medical freedom
Meehan’s career pivoted when he recognized the pervasive problems within the conventional healthcare system.
This realization led him to advance his training in functional medicine, immunology and interventional endocrinology, and to become a passionate advocate for medical freedom and informed consent.
A key part of his advocacy work was with Oklahomans for Health & Parental Rights, where he championed individual health choices and parental rights in medical decisions. Meehan was known for his ability to translate complex medical information into accessible language, empowering individuals to take an active role in their healthcare decisions.
While his views on pandemic-related issues gained significant attention, his medical freedom advocacy spanned a much broader range of topics, including childhood vaccination schedules, the use of alternative and holistic treatments and the right to decline medical procedures.

‘His work will continue’
Meehan’s legacy — the Meehan MINDSET protocol (Microbiome, Inflammation, Nutrition, Detoxification, Sleep, Exercise, and Total Hormone Balance) — will continue to offer patients an alternative approach to reclaiming their health.
His writings, speeches and interviews remain valuable resources for those in the medical freedom movement.
Thomas reflected on Meehan’s impact:
“His unwavering dedication to his patients and his advocacy for medical freedom have left an indelible mark on us personally and the medical community at large. We lost a brilliant mind and courageous leader but his work will continue.”
Final battle with cancer
Meehan was diagnosed with an aggressive squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue and lymph nodes in late 2023.
Despite the personal challenges he faced, he continued his advocacy work.
In his last public speech, read on his behalf at a rally at the Oklahoma State Capitol, he said:
“Though my treatment has left me unable to speak clearly and without pain, I refuse to be silenced. I implore each of you to find your voice and never waver in speaking out against injustice, no matter the obstacles we encounter.”
His battle with cancer also exposed him firsthand to the challenges within the healthcare system he had long criticized.
Meehan and his family faced significant financial burdens due to the high costs of cancer treatments, an experience that further fueled his passion for healthcare reform.
Those wishing to support Meehan’s wife Cathy and their five children may make a contribution here.
A celebration of life service will take place on Friday, June 28 at Life Church in Tulsa.
