Michigan Journalist Dies Day After Getting COVID-19 Vaccine

Former Detroit, Michigan television news anchor and producer Karen Hudson Samuels, 68, was found dead in her home on Feb. 9, 2021 by her husband Clifford Samuels, just one day after receiving a COVID-19 vaccine. “We suspect it may have just been a stroke but because of the normal side effects of the vaccine, it may have masked that. Hopefully, we’ll know soon from the autopsy report,” Samuels said.^{1 2 3}

The official cause of Hudson Samuels death has not been determined. It is also unclear which vaccine she was given. According to a news report, Hudson Samuels’ husband “couldn’t spell out which vaccine was given to his late wife, stating they were waiting to know from an undetermined autopsy result.”^{1 2 3}

But the death appears to have been sudden and unexpected. At the time of her death, Hudson Samuels had reportedly been celebrating the establishment of the William V. Banks broadcast museum, the first black-owned and operated television station in the United States. Hudson Samuels founded the museum, designated to the National Register of Historic Places, in 2016 and was its curator.^{1 2 3 4}

Michigan Man Dies Day After COVID-19 Vaccination

During the week prior to Hudson Samuels’ death, another Michigan resident died within a day after getting the first dose of Moderna’s experimental mRNA-1273 COVID-19 vaccine. Ninety-year-old Daniel Thayne Simpson, a retired accountant and veteran of the Korean War from Macomb County, was vaccinated on Feb. 3 and was found dead in his home on Feb. 4.^{5 6 7}

“He told my brother he was getting it and he had a sticker showing that he got it. But then, he stopped returning phone calls, said Simpson’s son William. “We were assuming he felt tired or something and went to bed early and never woke up. My brother Dan went over as he often does at 5 in the evening the next day. He found my father dead.”⁵ News sources reported that no autopsy was performed because “authorities said he died of natural causes.”⁶

“He (Simpson) has the morbidities that would predispose him to sudden death, said Macomb County’s medical examiner, Mary Pietrangelo, MD. “His physician agreed to sign the death certificate. It’s certainly not under further investigation. by our office, except for the fact that it’s reportable, obviously.”⁷
