Infant Boy in India Dies Hours After Getting Oral Polio Vaccine

A seven-month-old infant boy died on July 7, 2020 within hours of
receiving the live attenuated oral polio vaccine (OPV) in Palghar,
India. The baby was given one dose of the OPV drops in the evening and
was found dead the following morning by his parents.1 2 3
According to a news report, government welfare tribal committee chairman Vivek Pandit wondered, “How the healthy child died after vaccination?”1
Local authorities registered the case as an accidental death and the infant’s body was sent for an
autopsy to be conducted.1 2 3
On Sept. 5, 2019, two-month-old Priyanka Biswal died a day after receiving OPV and the pentavalent (diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus, hepatitis B and Haemophilus influenzae type B) vaccine at a community health center (CHC) in Naranapur, India.4
A report by the Orissa Post noted, “after intake of the polio drops, the child’s condition deteriorated on the way back home.” She developed a fever and was taken to the CHC where she was declared dead.4
In June 2018, a two-month-old baby and three-and-a-half-year-old child died hours after receiving OPV and pentavalent vaccines at community health centers in Chinhat and Indasai, India.5
India’s national vaccination schedule requires the OPV and pentavalent vaccines be given to infants at six weeks, 10 weeks and 14 weeks—a total of 18 vaccines over the two-month period.6 7
