The Weaver family's troubles with the law began when Randy was approached by undercover federal agents in 1989, who were investigating white supremacist groups. Randy was asked to inform on these groups but declined. Instead, he was later convinced to sell two shotguns with illegally shortened barrels to the undercover agent, setting off a chain of legal actions against him.
After missing a court date in 1991 due to what Weaver claimed was a misunderstanding over the date, an arrest warrant was issued. The situation escalated when Weaver refused to surrender, leading to a standoff with the U.S. Marshals Service.
The siege at Ruby Ridge began on August 21, 1992, when U.S. Marshals, attempting to surveil the Weaver cabin, engaged in a firefight after being discovered. This initial confrontation resulted in the death of Weaver's son, Samuel, and a marshal, William Degan. The next day, FBI sniper Lon Horiuchi, acting under the rules of engagement which allowed shooting if anyone with a weapon was visible, shot and killed Vicki Weaver as she stood in the cabin doorway holding her baby.
Randy Weaver and Kevin Harris (a family friend) were also wounded. The siege lasted 11 days, ending when Weaver surrendered after negotiations, facilitated by a local pastor, Bo Gritz.
