Social Media: Fluoridation in our
water supply is a controversial topic and has been over the past several
decades. There are those who feel the fluoride put into our water through
federal mandates is good for our teeth and prevents cavities. There are others,
however, that feel it is not only an intrusion to our freedoms to chose what is
in our water, but that it is a toxic chemical whose undocumented affects could
cause anything from cancer to ADHD.
Daniel Johnson, who was born and raised
in Logan County, is an advocate for clean, pure
drinking water. He believes fluoridation to be unnecessary and dangerous.
Johnson spoke to the Logan County Fiscal Court on Sept. 8 asking magistrates to
vote to have fluoride taken out of the water supply in the county.
“Our government has been putting
chemicals in our drinking water supply without our permission since the 1930s,”
said Johnson, speaking about fluoride. “The Fluoride in our water is industrial
waste, most likely brought in from China. It is unethical and unnecessary.
They’re excuse is to protect our teeth from cavities. Well if you want to
protect your teeth then brush them. We don’t need this in our water.”
Johnson said he had been working with
the Warren County Water District, and is hopeful they will
become the first in Kentucky to vote to take fluoride out of the water.
“I don’t blame the water companies,”
said Johnson. “They are doing what they are being told by the state and federal
governments. They are mandated to to this. The only way to get it out of your
water supply is to vote it out.”
Johnson further stated for people not
to take his work for it and to go and inform themselves on the issue.
After Johnson informed the fiscal court
on his views and opinions about fluoridation in the water supply, judge
executive Logan Chick suggested Johnson attend a meeting of the Logan Todd
Regional Water Commission and explain his viewpoints to them.
“We are a little different then Warren
County,” said judge Chick. “They are pretty much in charge of their own water.
Logan County is a piece of a much larger picture. We are just one entity in the
Logan Todd Regional Water Commission. There are several more entities involved
here. I don’t think Logan County can go out on its own and vote to have
fluoride taken out.”
Johnson asked when the next meeting was
of the commission, saying he would most definitely go and tell them his
feelings.
Johnson asked to be placed on a future
agenda of the Logan County Fiscal Court to continue his efforts of removing
fluoride form his hometown water supply.
Magistrate Thomas Bouldin thanked
Johnson for coming to the court meeting and informing them on the issues of
fluoridation.
“I tend to agree with you on the
fluoride,” said Bouldin. “There seems to be more cons than pros to having it in
our water. I paid money to have it removed out of my water. I try my best not
to drink it. This gives us and everyone a chance to think about this. I
appreciate you coming and informing us.”
