The dominos are falling one-by-one in Ireland, with the end of fluoridation becoming more of a reality each day. Just three weeks after the Dublin City Council—the nation’s capital and the largest city in the country--passed a motion calling for the immediate cessation of water fluoridation in Ireland, the second largest city’s council followed suit last week by passing the same resolution.
On October 29th FAN received word from Ireland that the Cork City Council voted 13-7 in favor of a resolution calling for an end to fluoridation throughout the country. This is especially great news because the University College Cork is located in the city, and is home to the dental school that has been the most responsible for promoting fluoridation in Ireland over the past 30 years. This now means that the two largest cities in the country, along with the largest county council, and at least 12 other county councils or corporations representing some 2-million people have called for an end to fluoridation in Ireland since 2000.
The recent victories have sparked a flurry of attacks by the pro-fluoride lobby, who are calling the movement a “risk to the young” and using scare tactics to mislead residents.
These two votes are likely to be the tipping point in the national effort that is gaining significant momentum due to campaigners like Owen Boyden and his Fluoride Free Towns campaign, scientist Declan Waugh, The Girl Against Fluoride, and the hard-working fluoridation fighters Robert Pocock and Gladys Ryan who preceded them. For now (but not for long), Ireland remains the only country in the world with a national mandatory fluoridation policy.
