Why Did This Tennessee Nurse Faint Right After Getting The COVID-19 Vaccine?

Avatar

In Brief

  • The Facts:

A nurse with a history of fainting from pain faints 17 minutes after getting the COVOD-19 vaccine while doing a press conference.

  • Reflect On:

The official explanation is likely true, and even if it is, would many in the general public accept this explanation as true? Or do we have a deep and justified loss of trust in media and governing institutions? Does this mean we stop inquiry?

As the COVID-19 vaccine rolls out, many are looking on with tension as they wait to see if any early receivers have reactions to the vaccine before deciding to get it themselves. We’ve heard of allergic reactions so far, as healthcare workers in Alaska had reactions after receiving their vaccines. They had no previous allergies and did not have COVID-19. Now, a Tennessee nurse fainted during a media interview just 17 minutes after receiving the vaccine. But was this incident caused by the vaccine?

Nurse manager Tiffany Dover received the Pfizer-BioNTech jab at CHI Memorial Hospital in Chattanooga on Thursday and agreed to give a press briefing when she eventually fainted.

“All of my staff, you know, we are excited to get the vaccine. We are in the COVID unit, so therefore, you know, my team will be getting first chances to get the vaccine,”

“And I know that it’s really … Sorry, I’m feeling really dizzy,”

Then she faints. One of the doctors behind her catches her as she passed out.

“It just hit me all of a sudden, I could feel it coming on. I felt a little disoriented, but I feel fine now, and the pain in my arm is gone,”

Doctors said the episode was not related to the ingredients in the vaccine. But how do we know? Nurse Dover told WTVC-9 news that she has a condition where she often faints when she feels pain. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also state that fainting may occur after various types of vaccinations and medical procedures – usually due to pain or anxiety.

This you would say, is the official and likely explanation. But do we have enough information to know this? Does this end our inquiry? After all, do we not have a brand new vaccine that is unique, not completely tested yet? We do know for a fact that this is a rushed vaccine, is it that hard to for people to wonder whether this is a reaction?  I don’t intend to sow doubt here, I intend to urge for balanced inquiry.

A Deeper Discussion

Was this incident caused by the vaccine ingredients? The official explanation is no, and this likely and may very well be the exact truth. But this is also where the conversation turns tricky – and cultural. There is no doubt that some will not accept this explanation, and it’s important we begin a balanced inquiry as to why.

One could argue that this was a normal happenstance and that fainting can come from vaccination due to pain or anxiety as the CDC says. It’s not like this is the first time somebody has fainted after a vaccine. Especially if the nurse was also nervous about going on camera, one might expect this to be possible – and it likely is the explanation given the fact that the nurse herself has a condition where she faints if she feels pain. Then again, one could argue this was a side effect of a poorly tested and rushed vaccine, and that the story we are told about her having a previous condition is just a coverup to keep faith in the vaccine. We can’t really know the truth for certain can we?

Yet debate built from certainty will inevitably exist for quite some time as people navigate what went on here, perhaps never looking at both sides of this, and perhaps not getting to the core of why we disagree so deeply on many current events.

This is where being able to hold a level of uncertainty about ANY position is key right now. It will keep our curiosity and inquisitive nature open long enough to continue to move through unfolding events of today and be able to navigate them with a balanced inquiry. This doesn’t mean we are holding doubt simply because “who knows, maybe it was the vaccine” but we are holding the openness to be able to maintain playful and heart-centred inquiry. Not just in this topic, but with any topic.

To me, the core is that this cultural moment, amongst many others in 2020, reveals how much faith has been lost in media, public health, government, and general health institutions.

And to be honest, I personally feel people are very reasonable in their position to have lost faith in these societal structures, as there is often a lack of honesty, a lack of transparency, and a ton of evidence of heavy handed corporate influence that swings actions within these institutions away from serving the public and into serving corporations. With so many people seeing this, and so much evidence to back it up, why would they trust what they say anymore? Why wouldn’t they be invited into conspiratorial inquisition?

It’s my position that many are not recognizing WHY people have lost faith, and instead are just saying they lost faith. And in cases where a why is presented, it always comes down to “fake news on the internet.” This is, dare I say, a lazy explanation that doesn’t seek to truly understand reality.

This was the inspiration behind my latest essay Conspireality: Time For A Serious Conversation? We are in a time where making sense of our world has become incredibly difficult, and people are starting to look elsewhere to obtain facts or information to understand what’s going on. Mainstream media has truly embarrassed themselves in recent years, and people don’t have a reason anymore to blindly trust them. Culturally, those holding on strictly to mainstream narratives see new and emerging perspectives as ‘conspiracies,’ even when much of the time these positions are based on facts. While at the same time, those diving into conspiracy can often become ungrounded and absolute about their newfound worldview, causing a blind spot to exist in the exact same way it would exist for those culturally attached to the mainstream narrative.

The essay title ‘time for a serious conversation’ alludes to the idea that we must begin to admit that conspiracy exists, a tough thing for many attached to mainstream narratives. But, we must also admit that conspiracy doesn’t necessarily exist in the entirety that some in the ‘conspiracy culture’ believe. Hence the need for a serious, balanced and yet playful inquiry around these topics. A maturing in our general inquisition around events is needed. Being able to hold multiple positions at once is key. Critical thinking is key. These are aspects of improving our self, self-awareness and ability to discern.

The observation I’m making within our current time is, if we continue to, especially at a mainstream level, deny the existence of conspiracy and simply paint those with more ‘conspiratorially inquisitive’ worldviews as being unhinged or believing in fake news, we will never find common ground, nor have our sights set on reality.
