The Truth About Fluoride By VICTOR ZEINES, DDS
As early as the 19th century, fluoride was thought to be effective for reducing tooth decay because fluoride was found in tooth enamel. In 1925 researchers tested that theory and found that fluoride actually made teeth weaker and will disturb the very structure of the tooth. This research was suppressed because fluoride supporters were trying to show that fluoride was a good thing their efforts had nothing to do with health but were purely for profit.
Fluoride is the core of some of the greatest fortunes in the country:
• Mellons of Pittsburg (US Steel), DuPonts and General Motors
• Used to enrich uranium for nuclear weapons
• Prepare sarin nerve gas
• Smelts aluminum and steel from the earth
• Lifeblood of modern industry- produces high octane gas, Teflon, plastic bricks, ceramics and drugs such as Prozac and Cipro, computer circuit boards, etc.
• Given to children in morning and night flavored with bubble gum or strawberry, and other flavors.
• Metal smelting-reduces the temp at which metals flow
The History of Fluoride:
1907— Freiburg Germany fluoride smoke poisoned cattle (Host, “The fight Against Injurious Industrial Gases” Ztschr Agnew, Chem. Vol. 20 1689-1693 1907)
1921—General Motors –Patented Lead as gas additive
1928— DuPont –Freon Patented as refrigerant
1930—Belgium Meuse Valley – worst industrial air pollution disaster 60 people dead (K. Roholm “Fog disaster in the Meuse Valley 1930, A Fluoride Intoxication” J Hygiene and Toxicology Mar. 1937 p.131)
1930—Andrew Mellon Founder of Alcoa etc. intervened with US Public Health Service to suppress research regarding fluoride.
1935—DuPont (Charles Kettering) meets with the ADA becomes member of Advisory Committee on Research in Dental Caries.
1938— Biochemist Wallace Armstrong reported that fluoride was found in teeth with fewer cavities. This turned out to be a mistake… However, as you can see all other research was suppressed unless it showed fluoride in a positive light.
How the Manhattan Project Sold Us Fluoride:
1944— At a meeting of the fluoride wartime industry (arranged by the Manhattan project), the National Institute of Health outlined the critical importance of fluoride to the war economy. David Ast, Chief Dental Officer of NYSHD suggested adding sodium fluoride to the drinking water of Newburg because “animal studies were of doubtful value” in studying toxicity in humans and the researchers could study the effects over a period of time. (Christopher Bryson “The Fluoride Deception” Seven Stories Press 2004 pg.84).
Dr H. Trendly Dean, DDS— opposed the project fearing fluorides toxicity but reversed himself and became “The Father of Fluoridation”. By become profluoride he also became the first Director of the National Institute of Dental Health 1948 and in 1953 Senior Position at the ADA.
May 2 1945— The Kinston-Newburg Study begins; published in 1948 Jour of the ADA omits that the fluoride was harming teeth (Philip Sutton “Errors and Omissions” in Experimental Trials Carlton press 1959 p. 49)
1950— As the invasion of South Korea began the Public Health Service reversed opposition and now favored adding fluoride to water supplies.
The Newburg-Kingston Caries Fluoride Study— was published in June, 1950. Dental Findings after Three Years of Water Fluoridation.
Fluoride was being pushed as way to reduce cavities. Gerald Cox was one of the main promoters of fluoride at this time. Citing the studies by Dean and the Kingston Newburg Study:
The study refers to Cox’s research, never mentions health risks.
Results of the Newburg Study:
• Woman experiencing earlier Puberty
• Heat disease doubled
• Defects on x-rays similar to bone cancers seen in twice as many boys in Newberg than in Kingston
• High rates of mottled teeth
• Have the same amount of decay as Kingston.
Sources of Fluoride:
• An industrial waste scrubbed from smokestacks of Fluoride Phosphate fertilizer mills to prevent it from damaging crops and livestock.
• Companies are spared expense of disposing this fluosilicic acid in a toxic waste dump but can sell this to municipalities, shipped in a rubber-lined trucks and injected into drinking water.
• So toxic are these trucks that after 9/11 authorities were alerted to keep an eye on road shipments.
The CDC Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (Published August 17, 2001/ Vol. 50)
• The Prevalence of dental caries in a population is not inversely related to the concentration of fluoride in enamel and a higher concentration of enamel fluoride is not necessarily more efficacious in preventing dental caries.
• The laboratory and epidemic research that has led to better understanding of how fluoride prevents dental caries indicates that fluoride’s predominant effect is post eruptive and tropical…
Water Fluoridation does not reduce decay
The level of fluoride incorporated into dental mineral by systemic ingestion is insufficient to play a significant role in caries prevention. (JD Featherstone. Prevention and reversal of dental caries: role of low level fluoride, Community Dental Oral Epidemiology 1999)
Canada— lowest tooth decay rate is found in the least fluoridated areas
New Zealand— 80,000: children found no difference in decay
Tucson, AZ— 25,000 children: over 50 years, “slight” increase in Hispanic
India— 400K children: highest tooth decay with high fluoride low calcium
Dr. Phyllis Mullenix, head of the Forsyth Dental Center, a national leader in neurotoxicology developed the Computer Pattern Recognition System—revolutionized the study of toxic chemicals and used cameras to record behavior on subjects (rats) that had been given tiny doses of chemicals and compares the behavior to the control groups.
• 1987— Studies first done using small doses of fluoride to finally negate the anti-flouride arguments.
• 1989— Results show rats giving birth to hyperactive rats, cognitive defects and retarded behavior, males more sensitive in the womb, females as young adults.
• 1990— Over 500 rats studied statistically significant.
• 1990— Meeting at the NHI Dr. Mullenix outlined her fluoride findings and stated findings about fluoride findings relating to IQ in children.
• 1994— Mullenix fired from Forsuth
• 1995— P.Mullenix, P.K. DenBesten et al “Neurotoxicity of Sodium Fluorides in Rats” Neurotoxicity and Tratology Vol 2. 1995 169-177 report suggested that fluoride does cross the blood brain barrier
• 1997— Papers appeared from 1944 from one of the Manhattan Projects main concerns were effects on the CNS (Newberg-Kingston)
Increased Risk of Hip Fractures:
• 1986— Ms et al Retrospective increased fracture rate
• 1991— et al Prospective Fluoridation doubled hip fracture rate
• 1991— et al positive correlation to fluoridation and hip fracture p<.0009
• 1991— found significantly higher fracture rates in counties with fluoride
National Toxicity Program Sodium Fluoride: Individual Animal Tumor Pathology (Rats & Mice), Battelle Memorial Institute 1989
Fluoride causes cancer NTP
• Hepatocholangio Carcinomas
• Osteosarcomas’Thyroid Adenomas
• Oral Dysplasias
• Fluorsis
• Osteosclerosis
The decline in caries in communities that are fluoridated has been highly significant—but so has the decline that has occurred in non-fluoridated communities. There has, in fact, been a general
decline in dental caries throughout the Western world, and the decline in fluoridated cities has not exceeded that in non-fluoridated communities. For example, BC drinking water is 95% non-fluoridated, whereas drinking water in Alberta is 75% fluoridated; yet the two provinces have similar rates of caries. Furthermore, Europe is 98% non-fluoridated, but global European dental health is generally equivalent to or better than that in North America. Whatever the reason for the decline in dental caries, it cannot be concluded that it is the result of drinking water fluoridation.
The incidence of toxic effects in humans from fluoridation may well have been underestimated.
The most serious potential association is with osteosarcoma in boys, which appears to have been loosely associated with age of exposure to fluoride. It is true that the CDC has (as has the original researcher) acknowledged that current data are tentative, but a further larger-scale study is pending from the Harvard School of Dentistry. At the very least, such data are grounds for caution.
Animal studies have shown a wide range of adverse effects associated with fluoride. It has been shown to be a potential immunotoxin, embryotoxin, neurotoxin and harmful to bony tissues, including both dental and ordinary bone. In addition, it can damage (inhibit) thyroid function in several species, including humans. Its effect on ecosystem balance has been little researched, but is unlikely to be positive.
On the basis of this “weight of evidence” we believe that fluoridation of drinking water is scientifically untenable, and should not be part of a public health initiative or program.
