Lead found in Granby school drinking water
Water samples from two schools in Granby from 2014 contained up to five times more lead than allowed by federal regulations, yet school officials there waited more than a year before notifying the public, according to reporting by WWLP in Chicopee.
The Granby School Department repeatedly failed to submit required water tests, failed to properly control corrosion for at least one month last year, and only issued a letter to the public when threatened with heavy fines and possible imprisonment, according to the TV station’s reports.
After being issued a Unilateral Administrative Order by the Springfield office of the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) on February 6th, interim school superintendent Judith Houle wrote in a letter to the public that her department had sealed off the bubblers with high lead content, and was complying with the DEPs order.
The Granby water system is not fluoridated.
Fluoride intensifies lead's poisonous effects on the brain

NEW YORK, Feb. 11, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- While the nation focuses on the catastrophic health effects caused by Flint Michigan's lead-poisoned drinking water, fluoride chemicals are still purposely added to public water supplies even though studies show they leach lead from water pipes and increase lead levels in children, according to a report from the Fluoride Action Network (FAN).
Fluorosilicic acid (FSA), a corrosive fluoride byproduct of the phosphate industry, is added to public water supplies, including Flint's, in a failed effort to prevent tooth decay.
"Studies show that FSA-spiked water is contributing to children's unsafe lead exposures and making the lead crisis worse," says attorney Michael Connett, FAN Executive Director.
"The nation is rightfully shocked by the lead crisis in Flint and the systematic failure of health authorities to prevent it, but the problem with lead poisoning is not a Flint problem, it's a national problem," Connett adds.
Lead service pipes were banned in 1986, but America's water infrastructure is still laden with lead-containing pipes and fixtures. The FSA circulating through these aging pipes intensify their corrosion, according to laboratory experiments.
Studies have found that children living in areas with FSA-treated water have higher levels of lead in their blood. Data collected by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) show that children drinking water treated with FSA and other fluorosilicate chemicals are 20 percent more likely to have dangerous levels of lead in their blood.
Massachusetts Fluoridation News February 15, 2016 2 The CDC has yet to warn the public about the fluoridation/lead risk. Instead, as it did during the
Washington D.C. lead crisis, the CDC has gone out of its way to downplay the hazard.
"The failure of public health authorities to warn the public about the hazards of lead in tap water has a long history that extends beyond fluoridation and Flint," notes Connett.
A study by National Institutes of Health (NIH) and Food & Drug Administration (FDA) scientists found that fluoride facilitates the uptake of lead into the blood of rats, and magnifies lead's toxic effects on the body. The study was conducted in the 1970s, but the NIH and FDA failed to take any follow-up action.
Recent animal experiments confirm the NIH/FDA findings showing that
fluoride exposure “consistently increases the concentration of lead in whole blood," and intensifies lead's poisonous effects on the brain.
Human experimentation
Researchers failed to obtain informed consent
from physicians or patients in sleep deprivation study
Two federally-funded studies that involved tens of thousands of patients, and tested first year residentsability to work in a sleep deprived state never obtained informed consent from either the patients or the residents, according to a report in the January-February issue of Public Citizen News.
The trials, that involved 190 hospitals around the country, forced first year medical residents to work shifts of 28 or more consecutive hours, nearly twice the maximum number of hours allowed by the main medical school accrediting agency.
“These studies violate fundamental ethical principles and federal regulations in place to protect human research subjects,” said Michael Carome, the physician who heads Public Citizen’s Health Research Group. He called them the “most unethical research studies I have ever seen,” according to the report.
Public Citizen and the American Medical Association have called on the Office for Human Research Protections of the Department of Health and Human Services to investigate the trials “and sanction all institutions involved,” said the report.
On-line petition seeks action on fluoride’s toxicity
A petition by Kathryn Goodick demands a response from the Institute of Medicine to a letter from Erin Brockovich and others that called on the Institute to correct inaccurate information on fluoride. The April 2015 letter was written by Karen Spencer of Gloucester and signed by Brockovich as well as Jean Nordin-Evans, the Groton dentist, Daniel A. Eyink, the Newburyport physician, and Stephanie Seneff of MIT.
The introduction to the petition reads:
I am writing to demand a response from the Institute of Medicine (IOM) and Congress regarding the April 2015 letter to the IOM from Erin Brockovich and others that was cc’d to thirty members of Congress. It concerned the ‘dietary reference intake’ (DRI) of fluoride established in 1997. The DRI determination was based on the IOM Food and Nutrition Board’s
Massachusetts Fluoridation News February 15, 2016 3
faulty assumption that fluoride, which is neither a mineral or nutrient, was an element that provided a significant dental benefit and had no known adverse health effects up to 10 mgs. per day.
It can be found at http://petitions.moveon.org/sign/dietary-fluoride- and?source=s.fwd&r_by=13025099
As of press time the petition had almost 1,000 signatures.

Massachusetts Fluoridation News February 15, 2016 20 Neurotoxin Resolution and its signers
In our previous issues we introduced the “Neurotoxin Resolution” (reprinted below) that calls for an end to water fluoridation in Massachusetts. In this issue we continue publishing the names of signers of the resolution. As names are added we will begin to list them by town and legislative district. Anyone who would like an electronic version of the petition and a related flyer should contact Michael F. Dolan at 413-323-5327 or mdolan.ecsn@outlook.com or P.O. Box 797, Belchertown, MA 01007.
A Resolution to Prohibit the Addition of Fluoride to Community Water Systems in Massachusetts
Preamble. This resolution is written in honor of the scientists at the US Environmental Protection Agency and elsewhere for reporting the adverse effects of fluoridated water.
Whereas a liter of fluoridated tap water contains the same dose of fluoride as the prescription medicine, and
Whereas water fluoridation violates the fundamental medical ethical principle of informed consent, and
Whereas a National Research Council investigation concluded that the current regulation of fluoride in drinking water does not protect the population of the United States, and
Whereas dozens of studies have found that fluoride in drinking water is a neurotoxin that lowers children’s IQ, and a Harvard meta-analysis of these studies confirmed the neurotoxicity of fluoride in drinking water, and
Whereas the EPA’s Neurotoxicology Division labels fluoride as a chemical with “substantial evidence of developmental neurotoxicity,”
Now therefore be it resolved that the General Laws of Massachusetts shall be revised by the passage of a measure prohibiting the addition of fluoride to community water systems in Massachusetts.
