Religion is a school of its own, teaching what it values and what it marginalizes or rejects, and why. Judaism, for instance, the older brother of Christianity, has norms which have had important influence on the formation of American character. Although very few Jews lived here until the late nineteenth century, the holy books of Christianity had been conceived by people reared culturally and religiously as Jews, and the elders of the New England colony actually looked upon themselves from time to time as the lost tribes of Israel.

What can be extracted as living wisdom from these Jewish religious thinkers when sieved through many centuries of Christian cloth? The following at a bedrock minimum:

As a condition of creation, humans are called upon to honor their origins in flesh through honoring the father and mother and in the spirit by closely studying the first five books of the Old Testament (known as the Torah), to dwell upon divine origins and a time when God directly interceded in the affairs of mankind.

FDA Commissioner Robert Califf on Wednesday warned that a potential bird flu pandemic could have a mortality rate of 25%. Public health experts Dr. David Bell and Brian Hooker, Ph.D., questioned the urgency and extent of the threat, calling Califf’s claims “farcical” and “overblown.”

U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Commissioner Robert Califf on Wednesday warned that a potential bird flu pandemic could be “10 times worse than COVID-19,” with a mortality rate of up to 25%. However, he also admitted the risk of the virus spreading to humans is still low.

In his testimony before the Senate Agriculture Appropriations Subcommittee, Califf said the FDA needed to “Be ready and … do everything we can to limit the spread of the virus, which has gone around the world multiple times now in many different species.”

In preparation for the bird flu jumping to humans, Califf emphasized the need for “countermeasures” such as testing, antivirals and “a vaccine ready to go.”

The U.S. government’s Strategic National Stockpile has three FDA-approved H5N1 vaccines, manufactured by Sanofi, GSK and CSL Seqirus. All contain mercury.

However, some have raised concerns about the effectiveness of these vaccines, as they were developed based on older strains of the H5N1 virus.

Pharmaceutical companies, including Moderna, are developing new bird flu vaccines that better match the currently circulating strains.

There are some people who are always on the hunt for good ideas. I salute those people.

There is an ability which needs to be understood: the ability to SEPARATE an idea from the PERSON who spoke it or wrote it.

I don’t care where I get a good idea. I don’t care if it happens to be in Hitler’s diary, or Stalin’s notes or one of Nero’s ancient declarations.

I can take that idea and put it in the wash, clean it of all traces of the person who put it forward; and then I can look at the idea AS ITSELF and think about it and evaluate it.

Then we have the morons. They revel in short cuts. Meaning they ALWAYS look at an idea in terms of who spoke it, and they ALWAYS judge the idea in those terms.

As if there is nothing else that can be done.

The civil servants blame us. Where to hell are we? Why aren't we doing a better job of managing our own affairs?

And we blame the bankers, the soldiers, and the civil servants, because they cashiered our assets and commandeered things and never told us one word about what they were doing or why.

Most of them have had no idea that they were working for the wrong "public" and no idea how the financial system was supposed to work.

The United States of America that we all think of when we hear the words is an unincorporated Holding Company formed September 9, 1776.
A Holding Company holds whatever is placed in its care, and in this case, the individual soil jurisdiction states that were holding all our national powers, placed (“vested”) their international powers in The United States of America.

[Remember throughout that we are talking here about the unincorporated version created by the Americans in 1776 — not to be confused with the British-controlled Territorial United States doing business as “the” United States of America beginning in 1789.]
Thus The United States of America owes its existence and function to The United States, the Union of soil-jurisdiction republican states that holds all the empowerment of the national government for each “State of the Union”.
If you remember from earlier discussions, the word “of” usually denotes a separation as in “apart from, besides, or in addition to”, but may also mean “belonging to”. In this case, “States of the Union” literally means “States belonging to the Union”.

In Washington, D.C., in 1992 a friend called and said there was a new Clint Eastwood western movie out, “The Unforgiven,” that the Washington Post reviewer said was anti-gun. In lieu of Eastwood’s former movies, we found this hard to believe. My friend insisted we see the movie.

We arrived only to find that the next showing was sold out. My friend insisted that we could buy tickets for a later showing and spend the time in a nearby restaurant with good food and drinks. I was more or less captured and reluctantly agreed.

When the time came, we reappeared at the theater to find a long line. Taking our place, I was struck by the expressions of the liberal men and women exiting the movie to which they had gone to see Clint Eastwood renounce “gun violence.” They were shaken people. I asked one woman, “Was it as bad as that,” and she burst into tears.

My hopes for the movie went up.

On the 27th of March, Texas Governor Greg Abbott signed an executive order which had the purpose of curbing speech deemed as “anti-semitic” on all state-run universities. Unfortunately, speech protection on public universities has been shaky in the past with universities attempting to restrict speech many times with varying levels of success. Supreme Court decision Healey v James 1972 states that “Among the rights protected by the First Amendment is the right of individuals to associate to further their personal beliefs. While the freedom of association is not explicitly set out in the Amendment, it has been held to be implicit in the freedoms of speech, assembly, and petition.” There is a long precedent of courts protecting speech, even what is considered hate speech in the United States. This has previously extended to college campuses, although states universities have challenged this ruling.

The terrible events of October 7 have prompted the Governor to issue an executive decree related to speech, specifically speech which is deemed to be anti-semitic. One can argue the semantics behind labeling anti-zionist speech as anti-semitic speech, but regardless, the First Amendment and court precedent has been clear on the topic. The executive order given by Governor Abbott features language which conflicts with the the First Amendment. In the order, the Governor supposes that

Millions of American “evangelical” Christians have been indoctrinated in the idea that they must be worshipful of Israeli politicians and bureaucrats. This is so because they are taught by preachers like John Hagee that the Bible says that God will bless those who bless the nation of Abraham. The absurdity of it all is that pop religionists like Hagee falsely conflate the Israel of the Bible with today’s politicians and bureaucrats of the seventy-six-year-old government of the country of Israel. The two have nothing whatsoever to do with each other. Israel’s politicians can be just as sleazy, immoral, corrupt, criminal, and murderous as any politicians anywhere. Hence the spectacle of American evangelical Christians cheerleading the killing of fellow Christians in Gaza by the Israeli military (and of the killing of even more fellow Christians from Russia by supporting Ukraine in its war with Russia).

What exactly are evangelical Christians worshipping when they so slavishly worship the government of Israel? They are not worshipping God or Godliness – just the opposite. They are worshipping the kind of people described by George Washington in his Farewell Address as “cunning, ambitious, and unprincipled men.” Ordinary politicians, in other words.

The Supreme Court decision Everson v. Board of Education 330 U.S. 1. (1947) prepared the dismissal of religion from American public schools. We are hidden by more than a half-century from the shock and numbness this new doctrine of "separation of church and state" occasioned, a great bewilderment caused in part by the absence of any hint of such a separation doctrine in the Declaration, Constitution, or the Bill of Rights.

The Court, which erected the wall of separation, went on to radically change the entire face of American jurisprudence, establishing firmly a principle which had only operated spottily in the past, the "judicial review" power which made the judiciary final arbiter of which laws were legal. No longer could the people's representatives expect that by working for legislation, their will would be honored by the courts. A new and higher power had spoken, a power with the ability to dispense with religion in government facilities, including schools and the towns and villages of America where public property was concerned.
